At Gossamer Gear, we often ran into the snafu of needing to capture hiking photos in February in the Northern Hemisphere. What a bummer! Twist my arm, I’ll work with two amazing Kiwi women down in New Zealand.

We planned a two-week shoot for 30k USD, including all travel expenses and photographer and model rates. This entailed sleeping on a few futons, scrappy styling, and a surprisingly cheap $800 round-trip ticket from Austin to Auckland.

We often camp with all the heavy camera gear while shooting from morning to dusk, and sometimes later.

Things that went right

No rain
No acts of god
Saw a kiwi bird on day two
Helicopter didn’t crash
The 4WD did its job
Talent was happy and amiable
Seriously, the weather was perfect
Jumped in lots of lakes
No camera or hiking gear broke

Things that went awry

Deanna fell down some scree
No break days (per usual)
The other shoe never dropped, so I passed on bungee jumping because I figured that would be the other shoe.

French Ridge Hut focuses on frameless 36-48 L packs.
Stagg Saddle: the highest point of New Zealand’s long trail, the Te Araroa, focusing on thru-hiking scenes.
